The Yangzheng Foundation (YZF) was established in 1990. The main objective is to support students’ needs on their educational journey. The students of Yangzheng Primary School have benefited from the enrichment programmes sponsored by YZF, as well as the prestigious YZPS Model Pupil Award. As an homage to our school’s rich history, the YZF has also sponsored the ‘Cui Lan Ting’ Garden and Heritage Gallery.

The first Yeung Ching Alumni Association was formed on 7 March 1952. Subsequently, the Yangzheng Alumni was formed in 2003. The strongly committed alumni cherish connections and school values. It leverages on the strengths of its members to help Yangzheng Primary stay rooted as it continues to reach greater heights.

The first version of the school song was most likely written in 1919. A new school song was composed in 1945 after World War II ended. In 1988, the school song was rewritten by the 16th Principal of Yangzheng Primary School, Mrs Dorothy Francis. Till this day, this song is sung by all Yangzhengnites with pride and joy.

Yangzheng Primary School became a government school in 1988 and was officially opened on 22 October 1990.The school underwent a major renovation in 2001 to enhance her infrastructure and create more space for a growing population.


In 2005, the school celebrated her 100th anniversary with a year-long centennial celebration. The then Minister of Education, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, was the Guest-of-Honour. The celebrations marked the beginning of a new era for the school.

After the Japanese Occupation, Yeung Ching School reopened during the British colonial government. Books which were hidden away during the Japanese Occupation were brought back and displayed in the school’s main library.


Classes started officially on 1 October 1945, with pupils coming from surrounding regions such as Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and even as far as Christmas Island.

Building on its reputation of being an extremely well-run institution, night school was also made available in the early years for overaged children and those from low-income families.


During the Japanese Occupation, members of the Board and the teaching staff contributed money to keep the school running as there were insufficient school funds. This period of hardship went on for three years.

In 1912, the school was renamed 养正学校 (Yeung Ching School). Mr Song Mulin, the second Principal of the school, introduced the English language as a teaching subject.
In 1914, half-day classes were introduced. Students who studied in English schools were able to learn the Chinese language. By 1918, the enrolment had increased fivefold to more than five hundred pupils. Coupled with the need to improve the facilities, the school management sought to expand its premises.
Perched majestically on top of the new school building was an octagonal pavilion, known to all as ‘Cuilan Ting’ or popularly known as the ‘Ba Jiao’ pavilion soon to become Yeung Ching’s most famous icon. This lofty and airy structure afforded an unrestricted view of the surroundings. More importantly, it stood for the dignity and honour of the school.

In 1988, Yeung Ching School moved from Club Street to 15 Serangoon Avenue 3. After the move, the school became a government school and was renamed 养正小学. ‘Yangzheng’ is the phonetic transcription of ‘Yeung Ching’.

In 2010, the stone steps at the former gate of Yeung Ching School along Club Street were recognized by the National Heritage Board as a Marked Historic Site.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, there was a decline in the population in Chinatown, leading to dwindling enrolment. The school was then merged with Peck Seah Primary and Telok Ayer Primary, but she retained her name.


The school then became a co-educational school, and for the first time in years, the school had Chinese, Malay and Indian pupils studying under one roof. It had become multi-racial.

The School Project Committee was set up in 1953 to look into the building plan of the school which was carried out in three phases. A new school building was eventually completed in 1965 with contributions from fundraising, and it served the community till 1988 before the school moved to our current site.

The history of Yangzheng Primary can be traced back to 1905. A group of Chinese businessmen from Guangzhou came together to raise funds to build a school for the Chinese community in Singapore.
A year later in 1906, the school was renamed as 广肇养正学堂。The official opening ceremony of Yeung Ching School was on 20 January 1907 with a cohort of over 100 pupils. 6 March 1907 was then determined as the School Foundation anniversary date. Many of its early teachers came from Guangzhou in China to teach at the school, known for its strong emphasis on Chinese values and traditions.

Established in 1954, Yeung Ching Scout Open Group is one of Singapore's oldest Open Scout Groups. The group primarily recruits graduates from Yangzheng Primary School. Engaging in activities beyond the Scout Group, members participate in events and courses organized by Scout HQ for personal and leadership development. Additionally, they showcase cultural involvement through Lion and Dragon dance performances during Yangzheng's Chinese New Year Eve celebrations, contributing to both scouting and community festivities.

Yangzheng’s Learning for Life Programme (LLP) is a decade-long initiative focusing on excellence, teambuilding, and character building through the 4H Leadership Model. Covering critical domains—Head, Heart, Hands, and Health—the program aims to equip students with essential values and competencies for success. The holistic approach, drawing from frameworks like the 4H Leadership model, nurtures confident and caring leaders. With a tiered approach, all students engage in basic leadership competencies, while identified leaders receive additional training and larger roles. The emphasis is on values-centric leadership, fostering a culture of excellence and preparing students to be tomorrow's leaders.
The LLP has been refreshed in 2021 to expand its focus on uniform groups to include the 21st Century Competencies. In 2023, the LLP also incorporated the E3 Learning Journeys in its life-skills enrichment and camps so that students’ learning is enriched, and the application of learning is deepened.

Yuen Ching Scout Open Group continues to organise lion and dragon dance training in the school’s premises and perform for the school during festive celebrations, maintaining a strong tie with the current cohort.
