In June 1928 Principal Wu Yuteng proposed a new curriculum in art and music - a decision greeted with enthusiasm from the school board. By 1931 Zheng Bingxie, a graduate of Shanghai Art Academy, joined the faculty. In the following years until the Fall of Singapore in February 1942, Hwa Chong would hire young artists and Shanghai-trained graduates to teach art.
Many of them were founding members of the Society of Chinese Artists (SOCA, established in 1935), as well as teachers of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) established by Lim Hak Tai, an art educator from Amoy. After the Sino-Japanese War broke out in July 1937, teachers such as Lee Kueh Sei, Chen Chong Swee, Lim Hak Tai (who became NAFA principal in the 1970s), Hsu Chun Lian and Lu Heng were drivers behind many charity art exhibitions to fundraise for China War Relief, while boosting public morale. Hwa Chong art teachers were also active in the art and cultural scene as journalists, graphic designers, musicians and stage actors.
A number of Hwa Chong students from this period became significant artists in Singapore and beyond. These include Lim Tze Peng (b. 1921), top calligrapher and Chinese ink artist of our time; and Ji Jizhong (b. 1930), who enrolled in the prestigious Central Art Academy of Beijing in the early 1950s and became professor at the Academy. Another alumni artist is Lim Yew Kuan (b. 1928), son of Lim Hak Tai, and continues to paint to this day.

Featuring ten exhibition zones and showcasing hundreds of historical artefacts, the gallery offers a comprehensive overview of the institution’s journey from its founding years to what Hwa Chong Institution is today. The gallery further captures the grandeur of Hwa Chong’s centennial celebrations in 2019.
Blending Eastern and Western design elements, the gallery reflects the school’s spirit of harmonising tradition with modernity. Its outstanding spatial aesthetics earned it the 2025 iF Design Award (International Forum Design Award) in the Cultural Spaces category — a prestigious honour often referred to as the ‘Oscars of the Design World’. It was the only winning project from Singapore in 2025.
More than a space for preserving and exhibiting history, the Hwa Chong Heritage Gallery stands as a cultural landmark — a testament to the Hwa Chong spirit and a witness to the institution’s evolving legacy through time.

It is equipped with a wide range of advanced facilities, including seminar rooms, conference rooms, and a café, offering students a conducive space for learning, collaboration, and innovation.
The Integrated Indoor Sports Complex, which is connected to the Holistic Education Centre, houses a gym, basketball court, volleyball court, climbing wall, shooting range, table tennis room, and fencing room. These diverse facilities cater to the varied interests and needs of students.
The name “Li Ren” (立人) was inscribed in 2016 by distinguished alumnus and then-Minister Mr Sam Tan. The phrase is derived from Confucius’ teachings in The Analects:
“The benevolent person helps others to establish themselves, just as they seek to establish themselves; helps others to succeed, just as they seek success.”
The naming reflects Hwa Chong’s aspiration to nurture students with empathy and altruism — individuals who contribute meaningfully to society and help build a warm, compassionate world.
The building was officially opened on 21 March 2018, during a ceremony officiated by then-Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Ms Grace Fu.
The Holistic Education Centre and the Integrated Indoor Sports complex exemplifies sustainable architecture. Its exterior walls are adorned with lush greenery and flowering plants, creating an eco-friendly and visually pleasing environment that reflects the school's commitment to harmonious coexistence with nature.

His calligraphy works also appear at iconic locations such as Long Shan Temple, Haw Par Villa, and the Chinese General Hospital, making them highly treasured cultural artefacts.
In 2019, in celebration of Hwa Chong’s 100th anniversary, the classical charm and distinctive Western architectural style of this building was thoughtfully revitalized. The ground floor was transformed into an art gallery, while the second floor was refurbished into the Hwa Chong Heritage Gallery, showcasing the school’s long-standing history and cultural heritage.
The Kuo Chuan Museum remains a unique and iconic feature on the Hwa Chong campus.

In the 1934 General Meeting of Sponsors, Mr. Lee Kong Chian was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors. He was re-elected for sixteen terms, totaling twenty-one years. During this period, The Chinese High School went through many hardships, but it continued to thrive and has achieved its current scale and reputation. The effort Mr. Lee put in and the financial support he provided were immense. To commemorate Mr. Lee's great achievements and virtuous character, his colleagues respectfully cast a bronze statue to eternally remember him and ensure his legacy endures.

In 1974, it was renovated with donations from the community to be used as classrooms. From 1987 to 1991, due to the expansion of the college, Hu Bao Building and the adjacent Hwa Chong Junior College Student Activity Centre were demolished, and this Science Building was constructed.
